Summer 2023 Staff

Robert (RC) Chance

St. Mary’s College
Principal Waterfront Instructor

RC is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He began sailing while he was a student at St. Mary’s College. Having fallen in love with the sport he spent each Summer teaching sailing on the Chesapeake Bay for local non-profit organizations that served at risk youth from Baltimore City. After college RC went into the private sector in finance. When he moved to Maine, with his wife and dogs, in 2022, he decided to reconnect with his passion for instructing kids in sailing by serving as a sailing instructor for BSSC. “I didn’t grow up sailing, and I know that if I had been introduced to it earlier it would have been a very meaningful experience for me. That’s why I am so passionate about connecting kids to sailing.” He is looking forward to his second Summer at BSSC!

Matthew Duddy

University of Maine
Lesley University
Principal Marine Science Instructor

Matt is a native Mainer and works for the University of New England in the School of Marine and Environmental Programs during the academic year.  Before returning to Maine in 2019 he was employed as a Senior Marine Educator at the New England Aquarium in Boston, and completed a master’s degree in Ecological Teaching and Learning at Lesley University.  Growing up along the coast in southern Maine, Matt has always been fascinated with the rocky intertidal and very interested in preserving coastlines and waterways throughout the state.  In his free time he enjoys running, skiing, listening to records, and hanging out with his family.

Emma Dullaert

University of Maine
Science Instructor

Emma graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science from the University of Maine in 2021, and will be completing a Master’s degree in Oceanography this spring. She grew up in the Netherlands and spent many summers on the coast of Southern France as a kid. Her grandfather worked as a marine engineer on cruise ships and would share stories from his travels all around the world, which inspired her to want a career involving the ocean too. In her free time, Emma loves to go on adventures with her friends and her trusty sidekick Chase (the dog)! This summer she is excited to share her passion and inspire kids to learn more about our oceans and coasts!

Jacob Allison

Maine Maritime Academy
Sailing and Science Instructor

Jake is a rising Sophomore at Maine Maritime Academy dual majoring in Coastal Marine Environmental Science and Small Vessel Operations. He has spent the past two summers as deckhand, then first mate on the schooner J&E Riggin. When not sailing the high seas, you may find Jake bagging local peaks or wandering the forest with his dog Bandit. “I’ve been able to learn a lot about sailing and ocean science and I can’t wait to pass some of that knowledge along!”

Antonio Fazio

Weber State University
Sailing and Science Instructor

My name is Antonio Fazio, I was born and raised in lush northern New Jersey which inspired my passions for plants, gardening, and sailing. I spent my summers learning how to sail and eventually instructing that same program at my community lake. The snow, mountains, and my brother all drew me out to Utah to study at Weber State University – where I was able to earn my bachelor’s in microbiology and still ride 100 days on snow a season. Despite my love for both Utah and NJ, I am thrilled at the opportunity to learn and live in a new ecosystem. I hope that my experience in sailing and microbiology can bring new perspectives and knowledge to the program!

Eli Hankins

Maine Maritime Academy
Science Instructor

Hello! My name is Eli Hankins and I am from Machiasport, Maine. I am 19 years old and heading into my sophomore year at Maine Maritime Academy studying marine biology. I absolutely love being in nature and working around animals. This will be my first year at Boothbay Sea and Science Center and I am very excited to get to meet and teach our campers this summer!

Rachelle Harpin

University of New England
Science Instructor

My name is Rachelle Harpin and I am a senior at the University of New England majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Education. I came to UNE from a regional vocational technical high school, called Assabet Valley, in Marlborough Massachusetts with a shop concentration in Biotechnology. I grew up in Maynard MA, right next to a nature reservation area which I loved to explore as a kid. I am so excited to work at Boothbay Sea and Science Center this summer because I want to apply all the hands on learning I have experienced in my life to share my love for hands on learning in science, especially around the area of science that fascinates me the most! Boothbay also reminds me of one of my favorite places is Massachusetts called Drumlin Farms, which I simply love. Besides science, I love skateboarding, soccer, volleyball, basketball, playing saxophone and ukulele, singing, doodling, sewing, painting, weightlifting, hiking, and learning new things!
