BSSC Summer 2024 Staff Leaders

RC Chance

BSSC is delighted to welcome 2024’s marine science and sailing staff who are dedicated to BSSC’s principles of curiosity, respect, teamwork, self-confidence and good sportsmanship. Robert (RC) Chance returns as BSSC Principal Waterfront Instructor.

RC spent summers teaching sailing on the Chesapeake Bay for local organizations that served at-risk youth. When he moved to Maine with his wife and dogs in 2022, he continued his passion for instructing kids in sailing. RC has spent the entire year helping Pauline Dion inspecting and repairing boats and equipment used in the summer program, assisting with the in-school Exploring the Science of Seaweed Farming program, and swinging a hammer to help with numerous projects at the boatshed. He is looking forward to his third Summer at BSSC!

Chelsea O’Connell-Barlow

This summer the Principal Marine Science Instructor will be Chelsea O’Connell-Barlow, a teacher and scientist. Chelsea has been teaching science for 16 years in Portland, ME. and Atlanta, GA. She currently teaches science at King Middle School in Portland. Chelsea loves opening students’ minds to the natural world and building their passion for all there is to experience in the outdoors. During the 2023-34 school year Chelsea and her students participated in the BSSC Exploring the Science of Seaweed Farming program.

RC and Chelsea are joined by a cohort of sailing and science staff including seven returning instructors.
