Aboard the Schooner Isaac H. Evans … helping youth “learn how to do”

We are thrilled to share with you that the participants in the Stay’s’l I, Stay’s’l II, and Top’s’l programs will be aboard the Schooner Isaac H. Evans for one all-day sail one day during each of the two-week Sessions. The Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s program aboard the Schooner supports our educational opportunities by expanding available waterfront access and programming in the maritime trades and marine sciences for our participants.

Time spent aboard the Schooner will further diversifying the on the water hands-on experience. Working alongside the Schooner’s captain and his crew, students will participate in traditional sailing skills that include but are not limited to hoisting and furling sails, sail trim, plotting course, and applying rules of the road. Integrating marine science, students will collect and analyze water samples, and explore what lies between the surface and the seafloor – giving them a better understanding of the waters and the marine life in and around Boothbay Harbor. BSSC students will also gain a better understanding of the impact that tides, currents, and weather have on navigation. And as developing stewards of the ocean, they will collect and record marine debris from the local waters and on and around nearby islands.

The Boothbay Sea and Science Center has invested significant time and effort to adapt programs and resources to ensure that they remain available in different forms. It is an honor and a privilege to recognize the Schooner Isaac H. Evans as a BSSC collaborator but more importantly as a partner in education and workforce development as we open up doors of opportunity for all youth in the maritime trades and the marine sciences.
