Here at BSSC safety is our number one priority. Our waterfront policy requires that everyone on campus must wear a lifejacket at all times when they are near or on the water. Additionally all our instructors have CPR/First Aid/AED training and the rigging on all of our sailboats is inspected before the season starts by Maine Marine Rigging, LLC.
We are pleased to unveil two new pieces of safety equipment which we were able to purchase thanks to a very generous donor.
First, we now have prop guards on our powerboats. These guards create a physical barrier around spinning blades, primarily serving to prevent injuries to people or animals, and protect property from accidental slicing of gear.
Secondly we have added bluetooth-enabled man overboard cut-off switches which will temporarily disable the engine in the event that the operator were to fall overboard. This system features an operator-worn fob that communicates wirelessly with a hub mounted in the boat’s electrical system. If the system senses excessive distance between the fob and the boat (as in the case of a man overboard situation), it shuts down the engine to prevent the boat from becoming wayward and/or injuring the operator. The wireless device is less cumbersome than an attached cut-off cable which attaches to the operator.
