This summer BSSC Session V students experienced the joy of creating art during a field trip to the Down East Gallery in Edgecomb.
Students in the Mizzen II, Stay’s’l, and Top’s’l programs spent a magical and inspiring morning with Boothbay Region artist Brad Betts at his gallery on Route 27.
The field trip was the culmination of BSSC’s Session V: Tall Ships and Taller Tales – a 2-week program that explored the history of Shipbuilding in Maine that included working with artists who celebrate it through their paintings.
Working from a photograph taken by BSSC’s resident photographer Bob Crink, Brad shared his perspective of the images in the photo and, by example, masterfully guided students to experience the feeling of joy and awe that comes from creating a work of art.
Following our visit, Brad completed the painting that was soon bought by a BSSC family. We are most grateful to Brad and the family as 20% of the proceeds of the sale of the painting went to benefit BSSC.
