The Maine-based Program provides 12 young women (grades 9-12) with a week-long sailing experience on the 50-foot gaff headed sloop SV Vela, and another week at the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership. At sea, these women  live and work together to operate the vessel, to conduct oceanographic research, and to become vigilant, cooperative shipmates. On Hurricane Island, they  learn about the intertidal environment, the sustainable infrastructure on the island, terrestrial ecology, and contribute to the research efforts on the Island.

They engage in leadership, team-building, and community living experiences both onshore and offshore, as well as generate their own research questions to learn the scientific process, identify problems and solutions, interpret data, and present their findings to the local community. Our joint mission is to inspire young women to strengthen themselves and to create a long-lasting, transformative STEM-based experience.
